About Hotel & Resort Water Treatment
Sizing a system? Send your flow rate and a feed-water analysis, and an AMPAC engineer will work out the configuration with you.
Short answer: A hotel or resort gets drinking water from a brackish well or from seawater with a reverse osmosis (RO) plant sized to its daily demand. Brackish well water goes to a brackish-water RO system such as the AP-LX series. Seawater goes to a seawater RO watermaker such as the SW-LX series, which runs from 1,500 to 80,000 GPD on land, with containerized units up to 100,000 GPD. Both need pretreatment, and the right model depends on a lab analysis of your source water and on how many rooms you serve. The tables below show where most properties start.
Sizing by room count
Output figures are product water in gallons per day (GPD). The room figures are planning assumptions, not measurements: 15 gallons per room per day covers drinking water, kitchen and ice, and 100 gallons per room per day covers a plant that also feeds guest-room taps and showers. Replace both with your own metered use where you have it. Each row lists the smallest catalogue model whose daily output is above the demand figure at full occupancy.
| Rooms | Demand (GPD) | Brackish well water | Seawater |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 750 | AP1500-LX (1,500 GPD) | SW1500-LX (1,500 GPD) |
| 100 | 1,500 | AP2200-LX (2,200 GPD) | SW2000-LX (2,000 GPD) |
| 200 | 3,000 | AP4400-LX (4,400 GPD) | SW4000-LX (4,000 GPD) |
| 300 | 4,500 | AP6000-LX (6,000 GPD) | SW5000-LX (5,000 GPD) |
| 500 | 7,500 | AP8000-LX (8,000 GPD) | SW9000-LX (9,000 GPD) |
| Rooms | Demand (GPD) | Brackish well water | Seawater |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 5,000 | AP6000-LX (6,000 GPD) | SW6000-LX (6,000 GPD) |
| 100 | 10,000 | AP12K-LX (12,000 GPD) | SW12000-LX (12,000 GPD) |
| 200 | 20,000 | AP25K-LX (25,000 GPD) | SW24000-LX (2 x 12,000 on one skid) (24,000 GPD) |
| 300 | 30,000 | AP40K-LX (40,000 GPD) | SW40K-LX (40,000 GPD) |
| 500 | 50,000 | AP60K-LX (60,000 GPD) | SW60K-LX (60,000 GPD) |
Notes on the tables:
- Brackish models: the AP-LX units are listed in AMPAC's brackish water treatment range. The AP12K-LX product page states feed water salinity up to 10,000 ppm. Check the feed limit and pretreatment on each product page against your water report before you choose.
- Seawater models: these are land-based seawater RO watermakers that need a seawater intake, such as a beach well or an open intake. Containerized seawater plants (SW80K-LXC and SW100K-LXC) are listed for larger or temporary supply.
- Solar-hybrid power for seawater plants of 5,000 GPD and larger is available as a custom option on request. It is quoted per site, and no standard solar-hybrid model is listed.
- Storage, distribution, post-treatment and permits are specified per property. Ask us to include them in the quote.
Brackish well or seawater: which one is yours?
Brackish water is saltier than fresh water but well below seawater. A lab test of total dissolved solids (TDS) and chloride on your well or intake tells you which system applies. See how brackish water treatment works and the seawater desalination range.
Why hotels treat their water
Water quality touches nearly every part of a hotel or resort operation, and guests notice. Hard water leaves spots on glassware and stains in showers. Chlorinated tap water affects coffee and ice quality at the restaurant. Mineral scale builds up in boilers and cooling towers, shortening equipment life and increasing energy costs. On islands, on the coast, or anywhere with brackish groundwater, the local source water is not drinkable without treatment.
A single system at the main incoming line can treat all facility water to one standard, then feed drinking, food service, HVAC and laundry. That usually costs less over time than maintaining individual point-of-use filters across hundreds of rooms and outlets. AMPAC USA also quotes centralized systems for residential communities; the largest standard unit is 100,000 GPD, and larger demand is quoted as multiple units.
Start with your water report
Scale is usually the first cost a property notices. USGS classifies water above 180 mg/L as calcium carbonate as very hard, and EPA's WaterSense program notes that softeners reduce hardness, scale formation and other negative impacts of hard water. Ask your utility or a lab for hardness, chlorine, TDS and iron before you choose between softening, reverse osmosis or both.
Each treatment answers a different problem. Commercial water softeners handle hardness for boilers, laundry and guest rooms. Industrial RO plants from 6,000 to 100,000 GPD cut dissolved solids and improve drinking water, ice and kitchen supply from one central line. Island and coastal properties with brackish or seawater supplies can look at seawater desalination. Send us your room count, daily demand and a water report through the quote form and we will recommend a layout.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get drinking water for a hotel or resort from brackish well water or seawater?
Use a reverse osmosis plant sized to your daily demand. Brackish well water goes to a brackish-water RO system (for example the AP-LX series) and seawater goes to a seawater RO watermaker (for example the SW-LX series, 1,500 to 80,000 GPD on land). Both need pretreatment. Send your room count and a lab water report and we will match the model.
What capacity do hotels need?
As planning assumptions, 15 gallons per room per day covers drinking water, kitchen and ice, and 100 gallons per room per day covers a plant that also feeds guest rooms. For 200 rooms that is 3,000 GPD and 20,000 GPD. Replace these with your metered use where you have it.
What water treatment does AMPAC USA offer for hotels and resorts?
Brackish water RO, seawater desalination watermakers, commercial and industrial RO from 1,000 to 100,000 GPD, and water softeners for hardness.
Can AMPAC USA systems work at remote island resort locations?
Yes, where a seawater intake or a brackish well is available. Land-based seawater RO watermakers run from 1,500 to 80,000 GPD, and containerized seawater plants go up to 100,000 GPD. Solar-hybrid power for seawater plants of 5,000 GPD and larger is available as a custom option on request.
Why do resorts and hotels need water purification?
Hard water stains fixtures and damages linen, boiler scale cuts efficiency, and chlorine taste and scale in ice machines drive guest complaints. Treating water at the main line also protects kitchen and laundry equipment.
