Water Softening Cartridges

Water Softening Cartridges

Water softening cartridges use ion exchange resin to remove calcium and magnesium — the minerals that cause water hardness — replacing them with sodium ions. Hard water above 7 grains per gallon (120 mg/L) causes limescale deposits in pipes, water heaters, RO membranes, and appliances that reduce efficiency and shorten equipment service life. Scale deposits of just 1/8 inch on heat exchanger surfaces reduce thermal efficiency by 25%.

AMPAC USA water softening cartridges are designed for point-of-use applications and as pre-treatment stages for reverse osmosis systems in hard water areas. Ion exchange resin exchanges Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ ions for Na⁺ ions in the feed water, producing soft water with near-zero hardness that passes through RO membranes without causing carbonate or sulfate scaling that would otherwise rapidly foul membranes in hard water conditions.

Water softening cartridges in standard 10-inch and 20-inch housing formats can be regenerated by soaking in a salt brine solution, restoring ion exchange capacity for reuse. For whole-house hard water treatment, AMPAC USA also offers automatic regenerating water softener systems sized by daily water consumption and hardness level.
