ANTHRACITE:
Physical characteristics:
Color: black
Density: 52 pounds per cubic foot
Effective size: .60-2.30 millimeters
Anthracite typically produces consistent improvements in turbidity
removal because, in part, to more efficient solids loading. Low
uniformity coefficient media also produces smaller changes in effluent
turbidity during periods of peak influent turbidity. Northern's
anthracite filter media is produced from the highest quality anthracite
available to ensure the physical characteristics of hardness, durability
and performance.

Density: 45 – 50 pounds per cubic foot
Effective size: .48 millimeters
UC (D 60): 1.72
Birm is an efficient media to
remove dissolved iron and manganese compounds from raw water supplies.
It acts as an insoluble catalyst to enhance the reaction between
dissolved oxygen and the iron compounds.
Other advantages of birm
include long material life with relatively low attrition loss, a wide

CALCITE
Physical
characteristics: Color: near white
Density: 100 pounds per cubic foot
CaCO3: 95% minimum
MgCO3: 3.0% maximum
Acidic waters on contact with
Calcite slowly dissolve the calcium carbonate media to raise the pH that
reduces the potential leaching of cooper, lead and other metals found in
typical plumbing systems.
Advantages include a high
uniformity coefficient for maximum contact for controlled pH correction.
NSF Standard 61 approved.

FILTER SAND
Physical
characteristics: Color: Light brown
Effective size: .35 - 2.5 millimeters
Acid solubility: <1.7%
Specific gravity: 2.67
MOH hardness: 7
Filter sand is an extremely effective filter media because of its
ability to hold back coagulum or precipitates containing impurities.
Filter sand size, angularity and hardness are the important filter sand
characteristics to ensure proper filtering.
Our filter sand is triple
washed in our manufacturing process producing a squeaky clean filter
sand that is virtually silt and fines free. Initial backwash cycles are
reduced as well, saving significant amounts of time and water in your
start-up backwash cycle.
AWWA Standard B100-01 and NSF
Standard 61 approved for drinking water and NSF Standard 50 approved for
swimming pools. |

FILTER-AG®
Physical
characteristics:
Color: light gray to
near white
Density: 24 - 26 pounds per cubic foot
Effective size: .57 millimeters
UC (D 60): 1.66
Filter-AG granules have
irregular surface characteristics allowing maximum removal of suspended
matter throughout the filter bed. Filter-AG can be used in either
pressure or gravity flow filter systems. It typically removes normal
suspended dolids down to 20 – 40 micron ranges.
Advantages of Filter-AG
include less pressure loss than most other mediums. It is lightweight
and requires lower backwash rates. Filter-AG has high dirt removal
capacity that result in longer filter runs with substantial savings in
labor cost, backwash water and time out service.

GARNET
Physical
characteristics:
Color: reddish black
Density: 120 – 149 pounds/cubic foot
Effective size: .21 – 2.45 millimeter
UC (D 60): < 1.6
Specific gravity: > 4.0
Acid solubility: < 1.0%
Almandite garnet is a
chemically inert non-metallic mineral that is quite common in the
natural environment. Garnet is well known for its hardness and
durability. It has a high specific gravity as well as its chemical and
abrasive resistance makes garnet an ideal filter media.
Our garnet is AWWA Standard
B100-01 and NSF Standard 61 approved. |

MANGANESE
GREENSAND
Physical
characteristics:
Color: purple black
Density: 85 pounds per cubic foot
Effective size: .30 - .35 millimeters
UC (D 60): < 1.6
Manganese greensand is a
purple-black filter medium that is used for the removal of soluble iron,
manganese and hydrogen sulfide from well water supplies. It also has the
capacity to remove radium and arsenic.
It is produced from the
mineral glauconite (zeolite). Using iron exchange properties of natural
zeolite, a manganese dioxide coating is deposited on the surface of the
glauconite grains. The manganese dioxide acts as a catalyst in the
oxidation reduction reaction of iron and manganese.
This media can be used in two
methods of operation: continuous regeneration (CR) or intermittent
regeneration (IR).
AWWA Standard B100-01 and NSF
Standard 61 approved. |

MTM®
Physical
characteristics: Color: Dark Brown
Bulk Density: 27 lbs/cubic foot
Specific Gravity: 1.7 gm/cc
Effective size: .6-.7 mm
Uniformity Coefficient: 1.9
Mesh size: 12 x 35
MTM is a granular manganese dioxide
filtering media used for reducing iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide
from water. Its active surface coating oxidizes and precipitates soluble
iron and manganese. Hydrogen sulfide is oxidized to a sulfur. The
precipitates are filtered out in the granular bed and removed by
backwashing.

NORTHERN ULTRA
Physical
characteristics: Color: Light brown
Effective size: .35 - 2.5 millimeters
Acid solubility: <1.7%
Specific gravity: 2.67
MOH hardness: 7
Northern Ultra is an extremely effective filter media because of its
ability to hold back coagulum or precipitates containing impurities.
Northern Ultra size, angularity and hardness are the important filter
sand characteristics to ensure proper filtering.
Northern Ultra is triple
washed in our manufacturing process producing a squeaky clean filter
sand that is virtually silt and fines free. Initial backwash cycles are
reduced as well, saving significant amounts of time and water in your
start-up backwash cycle. |

SUPPORT GRAVEL
Physical
characteristics: Color: Multi-colored
Density: 100 pounds per cubic foot
Mesh size: 1/8 x 2-1/2 inch
Support gravel, the lower strata of a filter bed, acts to support the
filter media. The maximum efficiency, the support gravel must possess
the necessary attributes of hardness and be rounded or non-angular.
Correct gradation and sizing must be calculated to properly support the
filter media.
AWWA Standard B100-01 and NSF
Standard 61 approved. |

WELL PACK
Physical
characteristics: Color: Multi-colored
Density: 100 pounds per cubic foot
Mesh size: #35 - 1/4"
Well Pack gravel is used for inground wells to form a barrier between
the screens and the natural deposit of the land which, in turn, allows
for the well to provide a very clean water.
AWWA Standard B100-01 and NSF
Standard 61 approved. |
