What is Seawater Desalination?

Simply put, seawater desalination takes saltwater, like from the ocean, and removes the salt. It uses advanced tech, mainly reverse osmosis, to pull salt molecules right out of the water. We push water from the sea, an ocean, or even a salty lake through thousands of super-tight semipermeable membranes. It takes a lot of pressure to do this, but it works. These membranes are special, they only let tiny water molecules through, leaving all the salt and other gunk behind. Plus, a big advantage of this process is that it doesn’t depend on rain, so you’ve got a consistent water source.

It’s true, desalination uses more energy than older ways of getting water, like just letting gravity feed water out of a dam. But here’s a thought- the energy it takes to give a family of four desalinated water for a whole day is about the same amount of energy you’d use to run an air conditioner for just one hour. How a Seawater Desalination System Works- The Steps

Step 1- Get the Seawater

First, we need the water itself. This could be seawater or “brackish” water. Brackish water is a mix of fresh and saltwater, so it’s not quite as salty as the ocean. We usually pipe this water in from about five meters deep in the ocean, moving it at 0.1 meters per second. You won’t find any fish in this water, but it will have particles, microbes, and, of course, salt. A lot of salt, actually. Seawater has roughly 37,000 milligrams of salt per liter. That’s like a teaspoon of salt in every glass of water.

Step 2- Pre-Treat the Water

Before we can remove the salt, we have to clean the water a bit. This “pre-treatment” stage gets rid of particles, biological stuff, and other impurities. Different systems use different pre-treatment filters. Since the main desalination process only focuses on salt, this step is super important for clearing out everything else.

Step 3- Reverse Osmosis

This is the core of it all- getting the salt out. We use an advanced water treatment method called Reverse Osmosis, or RO. Here, we push the water through special, thin membranes. Only the water molecules pass through, leaving the salt behind. We use powerful, high-pressure pumps in the RO process to make sure all that salt is effectively removed. These membranes can be pricey, so we use them smartly to keep them from wearing out too fast. If you take good care of them, they’ll last about seven to ten years. Proper maintenance is key to prevent fouling and keep them working well.

Step 4- Pure Water Vs. Salty Water

Once reverse osmosis is done, you’ve got two kinds of water. One is pure, absolutely clean water, ready for use. The other is super-salty water, which we send back to the ocean. This salty water, called brine, has about double the salinity of regular seawater.

Step 5- Making it Drinkable

The pure water we’ve collected needs one more step to make it truly drinkable. Skipping this could actually be bad for your health. This is called the mineralization process. We add certain elements back into the water to make it safe and healthy to drink. After this, the water leaves the plant, ready for you to enjoy however you like.
