What is Seawater Desalination, and How Does a Seawater Desalination System Work?

When you want to increase your knowledge about water treatment methods, a seawater desalination system is one of the most common options you will come across. Some of you might have heard of it, and some might not have. To make things simpler, here we have explained what is seawater desalination watermakers and how does a seawater desalination system work.

What is Seawater Desalination?

In simple words, seawater desalination is a process that uses technologies like reverse osmosis to separate molecules from seawater. Water from the sea, ocean, lake or other sources is pushed through thousands of tightly wrapped semipermeable membranes under extremely high pressure.

The membranes only allow tiny water molecules to pass through them, leaving salt and other similar impurities behind. One of the advantages of this process is that it doesn’t depend on rain.

Seawater Desalination and Energy Consumption

It is a fact that desalination uses more energy than other traditional methods of sourcing water, like gravity-feeding water out of a dam. However, the energy used to provide desalinated water for daily use for a family of four people is the same amount of energy required to run an air conditioner for only one hour.

How Does a Seawater Desalination System Work- The Steps

Step 1- Getting the Seawater

The first step is to get seawater or brackish water to the seawater desalination system. For those unaware, brackish water is a mixture of seawater and fresh water and hence is less saline. Usually, the seawater or brackish water is piped in from an ocean depth of about five meters and at a pace of 0.1 meters per second.

The water will not contain fish, but it can contain other elements like particles, microbes, and salt, among others. Salt is a key element, as seawater has around 37,000 milligrams of salt per liter. It is equivalent to a teaspoon of salt in a glass of water.

Step 2- Pre-Treatment of Water

Seawater must be pre-treated to help make the process simpler. In this stage, pre-treatment will eliminate particles, biological matter, and other elements that make the water impure. The pre-treatment filters are different in different best seawater desalination systems company. As the desalination process only focuses on removing the salt, this stage is crucial for removing all impurities.

Step 3- Reverse Osmosis

This is the most vital stage. In this stage, the salt has to be removed from the water. It is done using an advanced water treatment technique known as Reverse Osmosis or RO. In this process, water is pushed through different thin membranes that ensure only water passes through and the salt is left behind.

Very high-pressure pumps are used in the RO process as they pressurize the water efficiently and ensure that all salt is removed from the water. Membranes are usually expensive and should be used smartly to avoid their quick replacements. If maintained well, they can last for about seven to ten years. The membranes must be maintained properly to prevent fouling.

Step 4- Pure Water Vs. Salty Water

After the reverse osmosis process is complete, two types of water will be available. One is pure and 100% contamination-free water, while the other is salty water. The former can be used for consumption, while the latter is returned to the ocean. The latter has double the salinity of seawater.

Step 5- De-Purification

After the pure water is collected, it is treated again to ensure it becomes drinkable. Skipping this stage can be quite harmful to the health of the person who will consume the water. This stage is known as the mineralization process. In it, some elements are added to make it drinkable and not harmful to health. After this stage, the water leaves the plant and can be consumed in any way you prefer.
