Buying a commercial reverse osmosis system without knowing your actual requirements is how you end up with a unit that runs dry by noon or sits at 30% capacity for five years. This guide walks through every decision point — from calculating your daily gallon demand to asking the right questions before you sign a purchase order.

What Makes a System “Commercial”?

The distinction between residential, commercial, and industrial RO comes down to three things: daily output in gallons per day (GPD), continuous duty cycle, and flow rate requirements.

  • Residential: 50–150 GPD, intermittent use, single point-of-use, 0.03–0.1 GPM flow
  • Commercial: 100–10,000 GPD, semi-continuous operation, often feeds a storage tank or multiple use points, 0.07–7 GPM
  • Industrial: 10,000 GPD and above, continuous duty, process-critical applications, engineered to specific feed water chemistry

Step 1: Determine Your GPD Requirement

Start with actual consumption, not gut feel. Count your use points, estimate hours of operation, and build a daily demand number.

Size for peak demand, not average demand. Most commercial RO installations pair the system with a 500–2,000 gallon storage tank and a booster pump, which lets you run a smaller RO unit continuously rather than a larger one on demand.

Step 2: Know Your Feed Water

Feed water chemistry determines membrane life, pre-treatment requirements, and whether your system will perform as rated. Before you talk to a supplier, get a water test. The key parameters:

  • TDS (Total Dissolved Solids): Measured in ppm or mg/L. Municipal water typically runs 100–500 ppm. High TDS (above 1,000 ppm) affects rejection rates and recovery ratios.
  • Hardness (calcium and magnesium): Above 7 gpg, you’ll need a water softener upstream to prevent scale on membranes.
  • Chlorine/chloramine: RO membranes are sensitive to oxidants. Carbon pre-filtration is mandatory for chlorinated municipal supplies.
  • Iron and manganese: Iron above 0.1 ppm can foul membranes rapidly. Sand and iron filtration go upstream.
  • SDI (Silt Density Index): Below 5 is generally acceptable for RO. Above 5 requires multimedia filtration.
  • pH: Optimal feed water pH is 6.5–7.5. Extremes require adjustment.

A basic water test from a certified lab runs $50–$150. If a supplier quotes you a system without asking about your feed water, that’s a red flag.

Step 3: Pre-Treatment Requirements

  • Sediment filter (5–20 micron): Removes particulates. Replace quarterly or when pressure drop increases.
  • Carbon block filter: Removes chlorine and chloramines. Mandatory for any chlorinated municipal supply.
  • Water softener: Required when hardness exceeds 7 gpg.
  • Antiscalant dosing pump: Alternative to softening for high-TDS applications. More common in larger commercial and industrial systems.
  • Iron filter / greensand filter: Required when iron exceeds 0.1 ppm.

Pre-treatment adds to upfront cost but is never optional. Cutting it to save money is how you spend twice on membranes in three years.

Upfront Equipment Cost: Commercial RO systems in the 100–500 GPD range typically run $1,500–$5,000. Mid-range (1,000–3,000 GPD): $5,000–$20,000. Large commercial (5,000–10,000 GPD): $20,000–$60,000.

Membrane Replacement: RO membranes last 2–5 years with proper pre-treatment. A 5,000 GPD system replacement every 3 years: $2,000–$4,500 per cycle.

Pre-Filter Replacement: Sediment and carbon pre-filters typically need replacement every 3–6 months. Budget $50–$200 per change-out.

Energy: A 3,000 GPD system running a 1 kW pump 12 hours per day consumes 12 kWh/day — roughly $0.50–$1.50/day at typical commercial electric rates.

Step 6: What to Ask a Supplier Before You Buy

  • What membrane brand do you use? FILMTEC (DuPont) and Hydranautics are the industry standards. Generic or off-brand membranes may underperform.
  • Is the system factory-tested before shipment? Any reputable manufacturer should wet-test and verify flow rate and rejection percentage. Ask for the test report.
  • What are the warranty terms? A 1-year warranty on a commercial system is below industry standard.
  • Are replacement parts domestically available? You don’t want 6–8 week waits for parts when something fails.
  • Do you offer technical support after the sale? Make sure someone picks up the phone.
