These Celebrities Blew Their Monthly Water Budget During California’s 3rd Year of Drought
California’s water crisis is getting worse. We’re already in the third year of drought, and to help, the state set up monthly water budgets. Turns out, a lot of people went over their limit, and many of them are celebrities. Want to know the full story and which famous faces overspent? Keep reading.
The Celebrities
Last year, the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District in southern California declared a drought emergency. Since then, over 2,000 residents have used 150% more water than their budget allows. Many celebrities were on that list, and some even went over by more than 500%.
The list of celebs who blew their monthly water budget includes big names like Sylvester Stallone, comedian Kevin Hart, NBA player Dwyane Wade, and even the Kardashian sisters. They were all among the worst offenders when it came to local water restrictions in Southern California.
The Las Virgenes Municipal Water District serves affluent San Fernando Valley cities like Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Hidden Hills, Westlake Village, and some unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. They sent out “notices of exceedance” to over 2,000 customers.
Residents in these cities have been getting these notices since December 1, 2021, if they use over 150% of their water budget more than four times. Mike McNutt, a spokesperson for the water district, shared this information.
Some celebrities exceeded their budgets by over 500%. For example, a 26-acre Calabasas property listed under Hart went over its budget by 519%. That’s about 117,000 gallons, and it happened in June.
Two Hidden Hills properties linked to Kim Kardashian exceeded their budget by 230,000 gallons. A 1.86-acre property near Calabasas, belonging to Kourtney Kardashian, went over by 101,000 gallons.
The Reasoning
Another Hidden Hills property, listed under Wade and his wife, actor Gabrielle Union, recorded 489,000 gallons of water usage. In June, that same property used 90,000 gallons, exceeding its water budget by 1,400%. The couple addressed the issue, saying a swimming pool problem caused this violation, and they were working to fix it.
The couple stated, “We’ve been doing everything we can to fix the situation and will keep going to great lengths to solve the issue. We’ve replaced all parts of our pool system that have to do with water flow and leakage, plus we’ve switched to synthetic grass and drought-tolerant plants to cut down our water usage. We’ll keep working with the city and the water distribution company to make sure this isn’t a problem going forward.”
A 2.26-acre property in Hidden Hills, associated with Stallone and his wife, Jennifer Flavin, went over its budget by 544%, or about 230,000 gallons. Stallone’s attorney, Marty Singer, addressed the issue, saying the numbers “mischaracterize and misrepresent the situation regarding the water usage at my client’s property.” He also pointed out that the property’s “500 mature trees” could die without proper watering.
Singer mentioned, “My client has been dealing with the situation responsibly and proactively. They’ve let grasses die, and other areas are watered by a drip irrigation system. They also told the city about the mature trees and are waiting for an inspection and more instructions from the city on what to do. I’m confident that all the larger properties in the area have similar issues. So, I trust that my client won’t be unfairly singled out in the story just because he’s famous.”
Budgets and Penalties
Water budgets in the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District are custom-made for each household. The district’s website mentions that many factors, like indoor and outdoor use and “special adjustments” such as “medical needs” or “caring for horses,” are considered when setting the budget.
Besides a surcharge on the water bill, penalties include getting a flow restriction device installed. That’s the third penalty.
McNutt said, “This restrictor completely kills the functionality of your irrigation system.” He added that 70% of water usage comes from outdoor landscaping. He also mentioned that about 7.3% of the district’s customers are on a list to get the restrictor device, but it hasn’t happened yet due to a lack of resources. Currently, the district installs 20 devices a week, starting with the “most egregious water users.”
Severe Drought
California is in its third year of drought. Most of the Golden State is experiencing at least “severe drought” conditions. This means a longer fire season, “stressed” trees, and an increase in wildlife diseases, according to the state government website.
Not the First Time Celebs Went Overbudget
This isn’t the first time celebrities have exceeded their water budgets during a drought. In 2015, during a water cutback, several high-profile people like Jennifer Lopez and Barbra Streisand faced scrutiny. Even Kylie Jenner had to pay a $100 fine to the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District for using too much water that same year.
McNutt has said before that the best way for property owners to cut down on water usage is to get rid of their lawns completely. They should look at other outdoor landscaping methods, like laying down turf, mulch, or pulverized granite. He said, “Lawns are so thirsty, and they need so much water, it just doesn’t work anymore. So, we have to rethink what looks good in our outdoor living spaces. We really don’t have another option.”
