How Reverse Osmosis Water Filtration Works

ampac1.com/blog/ampac-usa-has-been-awarded-a-contract-to-design-and-build-sea-water-desalination-watermakers-for-the-south-korean-navy/”>ampac1.com/blog/comparing-two-ampac-reverse-osmosis-systems/”>Reverse osmosis works by pushing water, usually at 50 to 150 psi for home systems, through a special TFC membrane. This membrane has tiny holes, about 0.0001 microns wide. These tiny holes block dissolved salts, organic compounds, and tiny organisms, letting only clean water molecules pass through for you to use.

A typical multi-stage RO system cleans water in four steps. First, a 5-micron sediment pre-filter catches dirt, sand, silt, and rust. This keeps the RO membrane from getting clogged. You’ll usually replace this filter every 6 to 12 months. Second, a carbon block pre-filter soaks up chlorine, chloramines, and other chemicals that could harm the membrane. This step is super important if your water comes from a city supply with chlorine. The third step is the RO membrane itself. This is where TFC membranes do most of the work, getting rid of 95 to 99 percent of dissolved solids. AMPAC USA membranes can filter anywhere from 50 to over 500 gallons a day, depending on the model. Finally, a polishing carbon filter removes any lingering tastes or smells, giving you perfectly clean, neutral-tasting water.

AMPAC USA systems have the WQA Gold Seal certification. This means an independent group has tested them against NSF/ANSI 58 standards. They confirm our claims about reducing TDS, removing heavy metals, and ensuring material safety, so you know it’s not just us saying it.

If you’re worried about specific contaminants, AMPAC USA systems consistently remove over 98 percent of lead. This brings levels from the EPA’s action level of 15 ppb down to less than 0.3 ppb. We remove more than 95 percent of arsenic, which is vital for people using well water in affected areas. Fluoride reduction is between 85 and 92 percent. And if you add a UV stage, we eliminate 99.99 percent of total coliform. We also reduce PFAS compounds by over 90 percent, which is becoming more important with new EPA PFAS limits coming in 2026.
