While we’re always looking for new methods, we’re also working hard to keep RO at the top. This process does have a few downsides, like how much energy it uses, the amount of rejected water, and for big industrial operations, the running costs. But here’s the thing: RO is the main system used in almost all seawater desalination plants worldwide. It totally beats older methods like distillation. One big challenge for RO is membrane fouling.\\n\\nMembrane fouling happens when chemicals, tiny organisms, and other stuff build up on the membrane. This either forms a layer that makes the system use a ton of energy without doing anything, or it damages the membrane material itself. We’re developing anti-fouling techniques to cut down on maintenance costs. And believe us, maintaining membranes for industries like desalination is a huge deal. A typical desalination plant can have over 40,000 membranes. Imagine keeping all those big membranes in good shape! That’s why we now pre-treat the water before it even touches the membranes. This gets rid of all the elements that cause damage and really extends the membrane’s life. \\n\\nYou’ve got a lot of options for pretreatment. Here are some of the best ways to stop fouling, scaling, and chemical attacks:\\n

- Multimedia filtration (MMF):\\nThis system uses three main layers. There’s anthracite coal on top, then sand and garnet, and finally, a supportive layer of gravel. Bigger particles get caught by the floating anthracite coal, while smaller ones travel deeper into the gravel filters. A well-run MMF can filter out particles as small as 15-20 microns. If we use coagulants to clump small particles together, it can even remove sizes down to 5-10 microns.
- Microfiltration (MF):\\nMF is great for getting rid of most dust particles and bacteria. It has tiny pores, from 0.1 to 10 micrometers. This process really cuts down on fouling material before it reaches the main membrane. Water flows through hollow fibers within the membrane. Impure water full of sediments goes in, and clean water comes out the other side, ready for more filtration.
- Antiscalants:\\nWe add these solutions to the feed water before it’s filtered. They reduce the chance of the feed water causing scale on the membrane. Antiscalants and scale inhibitors work by messing with the way scale and crystals form. How much you use really depends on your specific Reverse Osmosis system and, more importantly, what’s in your feed water.
- Water softeners:\\nThese can replace scale-forming ions in the water with ones that won’t form scale. Just be sure to have another filter layer, like a 5-micron cartridge, to catch anything if the water softener doesn’t quite do its job.
- Sodium bisulfate:\\nThis is super helpful for taking out leftover chlorine from the water. Chlorine causes odor and, in high amounts, can damage membranes. When you add the right amount to the feed water, it can remove all the chlorine.
- Granular Activated carbon (GAC):\\nGAC works well for removing both residual chemicals and organic material. The GAC media comes from carbon, wood, or nutshells. The activated carbon chemically reacts with chlorine and chloramine, turning them into non-oxidizing chlorine ions. This means they won’t harm the membranes. However, microorganisms tend to collect at the bottom of the bed because the carbon doesn’t react with organic materials anymore. This can lead to bacteria build-up, meaning you might need to replace the GAC frequently. So, for RO feed water pretreatment, it might not always be the best choice.

For big industrial RO systems, specialized experts figure out the best solution for reducing scaling. If you have a residential RO system, it’s smart to get a local expert to test your water supply carefully before installing any pretreatment system.
