Provisioning systems usually source from nearby groundwater reservoirs, with brackish quality water. Robust pre-treatment reduces the total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration and eliminates sediment and suspended solids. Microorganisms are likewise neutralized prior to membrane filtration.

Residual dissolved ions are then removed through reverse osmosis, and then post-filtration is performed to balance the acidity of the water (pH). Ultraviolet (UV) sterilization is performed prior to storage, and for water that is stored for extended periods, a recirculation system pumps stored water through ultraviolet sterilization and then returns the sterilized water to the tank, inhibiting any bacterial growth.
