There’s Hope

Quick Answer: California has a real water problem. It’s because we’ve given out too many surface water rights, pumped too much groundwater, and climate change is making droughts worse. We’re working on solutions like more water recycling, building more desalination plants, storing water underground, and making conservation a must. But in dry years, we need every single one of these approaches, all at once, to close the gap between how much water we have and how much we need.

2021 wasn’t California’s best year for water, that’s for sure. It was incredibly dry, though some heavy rain and snow at the end offered a glimmer of hope. But does that mean California’s water troubles are over? Let’s talk about it.

The Good News

<span style="font-weight: California saw it all in 2021: drought, wildfires, even water restrictions. Folks living here didn't have it easy. Then, things shifted. The dryness gave way to a downpour at the end of the year. Back-to-back storms dumped about 7 inches of rain in downtown LA in December. The National Weather Service said that tripled the normal 2.03 inches for the month, putting it among the top 10 wettest Decembers.

<span style="font-weight: The LA River, which was just a trickle in November, swelled to about 10 feet in some spots. A flash flood in Malibu even trapped at least 50 campers; rescuers pulled them from raging, muddy waters.

<span style="font-weight: Even inside downtown LA's Union Station, the main walkway flooded with inches of water. A crew used squeegees to push water toward pumps. Some people said they'd never seen anything like it and worried about slipping and getting hurt.

Don’t Get Too Optimistic

<span style="font-weight: Experts say while the rain and snow are good, and December was one of the soggiest months recently, expecting the drought to end is a big ask. The 2021 water year, which finished on September 30, was the driest in a century. So, a sudden burst of rain and snow isn't a quick fix.

<span style="font-weight: Some of 2021's worst moments include reservoirs like Lake Mead shrinking to record lows. Wildfires, fueled by drought-dried plants, burned over 2.5 million acres across the state. Heat waves even killed hundreds of people in California. And remember when the hydroelectric power plant at Lake Oroville had to shut down because of low water? That was tough.

<span style="font-weight: Even though the storms boosted the state's water supplies, drought conditions are still here. Reservoirs are getting more water, but that doesn't mean everything's fine now. Those storms also caused a lot of damage, over US$22 million. Life on the streets became tougher and more dangerous, too.

<span style="font-weight: December was better, and we can only hope January, February, and March are just as good.

<span style="font-weight: Still, we shouldn't stop conserving water.
