A huge 733 million of them are in places facing critical water shortages. Many people think water shortages only happen in developing nations. That's just not true. Developed countries, like the US, deal with water shortages too. We've seen it recently when authorities brought up the issue again. Believe it or not, for the first time ever, US authorities officially declared a water shortage for the Lake Mead Reservoir this Monday. This means water supply cuts for the Southwest, an area already suffering from drought. Ten Western governors have even asked for federal drought aid. Want to know more about this water crisis and what we can do about it? Keep reading.

How Water Distribution Will Be Impacted?

<span style="font-weight: This official water shortage means less water for Nevada, Mexico, and Arizona. The cuts will start for the year beginning in October 2021. The US Bureau of Reclamation, an agency of the Interior Department, shared this news.

<span style="font-weight: Arizona's annual water distribution will likely drop by 18 percent, Nevada's by 7 percent. Even Mexico will see a 5 percent reduction in its water supply. These allocations to Mexico are required by a treaty signed way back in 1944.

The Letter from the Governors

<span style="font-weight: Ten Western governors have asked President Joe Biden to declare a federal drought disaster in their states. If he does, ranchers and farmers could get special assistance beyond what's available in emergency programs. The governors wrote in their letter, "Historic drought levels threaten to wipe out entire crops, reduce yields and harbor extreme levels of pests and diseases that add to cumulative losses."

<span style="font-weight: They also mentioned that the drought has severely cut down feed supplies in the US West. Hay prices are skyrocketing, forcing many farmers and herders to auction off livestock and even consider selling their land for development.

The Real Meaning

<span style="font-weight: If you're wondering what these water shortages really mean for the US, understand that reservoir supply cuts mean less water for towns, Native American tribes, and even agriculture.

<span style="font-weight: These cuts will affect about 40 million people who depend on the river for water. The first round of cuts will mostly hit Arizona farmers, starting in January. Nevada will also need to reduce its water use from the beginning of next year. State officials have said they've already cut water deliveries. More cuts might be necessary if Lake Mead's water level keeps dropping.

Impact of Climate Change

<span style="font-weight: Tanya Trujillo, Interior Department Assistant Secretary for water and science, pointed to climate change, saying, "We are seeing the effects of climate change." She also highlighted high temperatures, dry ground, and below-average snowpack as part of the problem. She added, "Unfortunately, this trend could continue."

Lake Mead

<span style="font-weight: Lake Mead, built in the 1930s, is the biggest reservoir in the US. It was formed from the Colorado River Dam on the Arizona-Nevada border. It's been crucial for the water supply of about 25 million people living in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, Tucson, and Phoenix.

<span style="font-weight: According to the Interior Department, the drought in the US West has brought both Lake Mead and Lake Powell, the country's second-largest reservoir, to historic lows. The total water stored in the Colorado River system is now at 40 percent of its capacity. It was 49 percent just a year ago.

<span style="font-weight: A study in January 2021, which predicts winter reservoir water levels, said Lake Mead might be 324.9 meters above sea level. That's about 2.7 meters lower than the official trigger for a water shortage. The lake is now at its lowest level since it was formed in the 1930s. If we don't take proper steps, it could be at 34 percent capacity soon.

<span style="font-weight: Officials have also stated that the reservoir's elevation will likely keep going down. States like California, Nevada, and Arizona are looking at options to prevent the reservoir from dropping below 310.9 meters.

Additional Actions

<span style="font-weight: Bureau of Reclamation Deputy Commissioner Camille Touton said at a news conference on Monday that the decision to cut water wasn't easy. She mentioned that "additional actions will likely be necessary in the very near future."

The Growing Drought

<span style="font-weight: Most of the US West is experiencing a multi-year drought that's unprecedented. A UN report released recently warned that droughts are getting worse globally, with more intensity and frequency as our planet warms. Droughts used to happen about every ten years, but now they occur 70 percent more often.

<span style="font-weight: While climate change is a big factor, not all droughts are solely because of it. Sometimes, they happen when excess heat in the atmosphere pulls more moisture from the earth. That's why droughts are worse than ever!

<span style="font-weight: It's also a tough truth that the world has warmed around 1.2 degrees Celsius since the start of the industrial era. It's time for governments and people to cut emissions to reverse the damage over the next few decades or centuries.

A Possible Solution to US West Water Cuts – AMPAC USA’s Mobile and Solar Water Treatment Systems

<span style="font-weight: If you're dealing with water cuts in your area and need more pure water, you should check out the mobile and solar water treatments from AMPAC USA. We build Advanced Mobile Water Treatment, Water Purification, and <Desalination systems. You can move these systems on their mobile platforms, like enclosed truck trailers for towing, even to remote places without access to the electrical grid. They can run on optional solar or fuel-driven power generators. Mobile and solar water treatment plants are essential resources during disasters and emergencies like droughts.

<span style="font-weight: Mobile and Solar Water Treatment equipment offers the most convenient fix for these problems. We design this equipment to handle emergencies effectively. You don't need a fixed energy source or a huge power supply to run it. You can operate these anywhere, often using a mobile van fitted with the water treatment plant. These mobile water purifiers run on solar energy or fuel-driven power generators. They're just as good at making safe, pure drinking water as any power-operated water purifier.

<span style="font-weight: AMPAC USA Mobile Water Treatment Systems are known worldwide for their tough durability, reliability, and mobility. A similar military product line, called ROWPU (reverse osmosis water purification unit), is approved by NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization military alliance between the United States and several European partner countries.

<span style="font-weight: AMPAC USA suggests using portable water purification systems, solar power water systems, mobile water treatment systems, and mobile water provisioning systems when there's a drought.
