We&#8217;re changing that. We&#8217;ve developed a way to estimate ARs for human pharmaceuticals at the freshwater ecoregion level. Here&#8217;s how it works: First, we predict how much a country uses per person each year, using a regression model. Next, we figure out exact freshwater concentrations. We do this by combining mass balance models that track where the pharmaceutical goes-in humans, through wastewater treatment plants, and finally into the environment. Last, we take those freshwater concentrations for each ecoregion and divide them by the regulatory limit from toxicity tests. That gives us an ecoregion-specific AR. We used this method to model how ARs for carbamazepine and ciprofloxacin changed from 1995-2015. These are two common, important human pharmaceuticals. Our analysis showed that ARs from these drugs usually jumped 10-20 times over those 20 years. Carbamazepine risks were generally low during this time, with an AR less than 0.1. But some crowded or dry ecoregions saw higher ARs, up to 1.1. Ciprofloxacin risks were much higher. In 2015, 223 out of 449 freshwater ecoregions had ARs greater than 1. When we compared our predictions to actual measurements in ten river basins, carbamazepine concentrations matched up well. However, our model generally underestimated ciprofloxacin concentrations, sometimes by one to two orders of magnitude, when compared to measurements in four river basins. This procedure is a solid first step for evaluating ARs of many human pharmaceuticals globally.<\/p>\n<p>\\\\n<a
